Platform: Windows (All Versions)

Review by Frederick Barton (Cybersecurity Editor)

on 31 Mar 2016

If tapping the F8 key continuously sounds familiar and irritating at the same time, then you have surely switched to your operating system's safe mode and you surely know how tedious it is to wait for the restart, tap the F8 key and potentially miss the correct moment and watch as Windows starts up in normal mode again. BootSafe addresses this issue by making it much easier to switch between modes in Windows. Instead of waiting for a small window of opportunity, you can just tell this application to switch modes for you.

BootSafe is absolutely free and it is compatible with all popular Windows versions. It comes as a single executable file, in a ZIP archive, which you only need to extract and run, without going through an installation process. The application doesn't have any special requirements and it works even on low end machines.

There is not much to say about BootSafe. The application can't get more simple. When launched, it will present a series of rebooting options on a compact user interface. You can choose to reboot your computer normally, in safe mode, with or without networking or reboot it in safe mode with command prompt only.

The application provides a short description for each rebooting option. Once you select one, by clicking its radio button, you only need to click a large button, in the lower right corner of the window, to reboot your computer right away, in the selected mode. Alternatively, you can choose an option to apply the selected configuration without rebooting. This way, you can choose the precise moment when to switch to the desired mode, by restarting the machine manually.

Switching to safe mode in Windows can be much faster and easier when using BootSafe.

Pros

You can switch to safe mode with only two clicks. BootSafe lets you switch immediately or at the next manual reboot. The application is free, lightweight and it doesn't need to be installed.

Cons

There are no obvious drawbacks to mention.
